Four Wheels Around - A Road Trip from the UK to South Africa

In February 2009 we are setting off on the trip of a lifetime from Brighton, E-Sussex, UK to South Africa. Furthermore, we are raising money for the British Red Cross along the way. This blog will cover our preparation until we leave and our adventures whilst we are on the road.

Latest News.....

On this page we will include all our latest news in the run up to our departure!

  • July 2008 - We decided instead of travelling to Australia to travel around East Africa to South Africa!
  • August 4th 2008 - Katie passed her driving test!
  • September 1st 2008 - We bought a vehicle..... Today we purchased a Land Rover 110 from a lovely guy called Steve. He had owned the vehicle since 1985 and even driven it himself from South Africa to the UK back in 1986. Thus this particular Landy was already fully kitted out for an overland trip! We had a number of apprehensions before buying the vehicle, mainly due to its age but finally decided to go for it.
  • October 2008 - The Landy spent most of October in the garage. We used Deep South Land Rovers based locally to Alex in Littlehampton who gave the vehicle a complete overhaul before deeming it fit for Africa! Some of the work we had done is described on our 'Preparing the Landy' page.
  • November 2008 - Our first road trip in the Landy. Early in November with the Landy back from Deep South we took the Land Rover on its first trip since all her repairs. We did a 750 round trip to Southport via Manchester over a weekend. This offered us a good test of the Land Rover with the aim of discovering further faults and problems with the vehicle before the off! After the first test we were pleased with the vehicle. A couple of problems did come to light and we sent the Landy back to Deep South for some further work!
